Mallorca (Majorca) is the largest of the Balearic Islands and has become a popular holiday destination since 'package tourism' began in 1952. Mallorca has been inhabited since ancient times and burial chambers show evidence of settlers during the Palaeolithic Era, it was later occupied by the Romans in 123 BC and under Roman rule became a thriving island with an economy based on the production of wine, olive oil and salt.

The Romans founded such towns as the capital Palma (Palmaria) and Alcudia (Pollentia). Conquered by both the Vandals and the Byzantines, Mallorca eventually came under the control of the Moors in 902, was it finally re-conquered for the Christians by Jaime I of Aragon in 1229.

Some famous people have lived on Mallorca including George Sand, Frederick Chopin, Robert Graves and Joan Miro, modern celebrities with homes there include Michael Douglas, Boris Becker and Michael Schumacher.

You will probably be arriving in Mallorca at the capital, Palma de Mallorca, either by plane at Son Sant Joan Airport or by ferry from the mainland or the other Balearic Islands, some driving distances that you will have to travel to get to your resort will be Palma Nova (28 kilometres), Magaluf (30 kilometres), Santa Ponsa (34 kilometres), Puerto Pollensa (68 kilometres), Alcudia (64 kilometres).
