Birthplace of the Franciscan friar, Junipero Serra, the little inland town of Petra is typical of the area, its warm brown houses lining a maze of narrow streets and alleyways. Junipero Serra is claimed to be the founder of California, having been sent there in the 18th century by King Carlos III to establish Christian missions. The chain of missions subsequently prospered and became the cities of San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San José and San Francisco. Visitors to Petra can see his birthplace, Casa Natal Fray Junipero Serra, and a museum with exhibits relating to his life and work, and also the font where he was baptised (church of Sant Pere). Also worth a look in Petra is the 17th century monastery of Sant Bernat.
Petra is located just off the MA-3320, about 40 km from the airport at Palma de Mallorca.
