Mallorca Resorts - Andratx and Puerto Andratx

Andratx Mallorca - The little Mallorcan town of Andratx sits amid a valley of almond groves in the extreme south-west of the island, overshadowed by the Puig de Galatzó mountain which reaches a height of 3,366 feet.

Ancient watchtowers look down on the white-walled houses of the old town like protective mothers. Andratx was a significant centre of Mallorca culture during the 13th century and important people such as the Bishop of Barcelona and King Jaime I of Aragon had homes in the town. Today Andratx is a charming little town and well worth a visit if you are in the area, take a look at the fortress like Church of Santa Maria, while you are there.

It is somewhat different and not to be confused with the nearby port area and resort of Puerto Andratx, a former fishing village which in recent years has grown into an exclusive resort, favoured by the rich and famous.

The fishing boats have been largely replaced by luxury yachts, but don’t be put off, Puerto Andratx is still a lovely place to visit or even take a holiday, and has not been spoilt, as have many of the other southern Mallorca resorts, you might even spot a film star or sports hero during your visit, such icons as Michael Schumacher and Tom Cruise have homes there.

Fishing has not disappeared altogether and local craft still operate from the port, there is also a fish market held in the harbour.

Puerto Andratx has a decent selection of hotels should you wish to spend more time there, you may also find some privately owned rental accommodation, apartments and villas, try renting a luxury detached villa if you really want to live like a VIP. Golfers will enjoy the nearby course at Golf de Andratx.

Andratx and Puerto Andratx are situated on the MA-1 motorway, which runs from the capital Palma de Mallorca, it is about 35 minutes drive (43 kilometres)from the airport.
