City Guide to Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca Spain - Originally founded as a Roman camp in about 123 BC, Palma de Mallorca is now the capital of Mallorca and of the Balearic Islands group. Having almost half of the population of Mallorca, Palma is also the 12th largest metropolitan area in Spain, with a population of 383,000.
The location of the only airport on Mallorca (Majorca), Palma is a working city and port, which despite modern influences still retains much of its historical charm, it has some of the main tourist attractions on the island and pays host to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Palma de Mallorca’s most famous attraction is the magnificent Gothic cathedral, known to the locals as “La Seu”. The main landmark of the city, the cathedral boasts one of the largest stained glass windows in the world (the rose window), with 1,236 coloured glass pieces and measuring 11 metres across.
Below the towering cathedral lies the ancient Almudaina Palace (Palau Almundaina), dating from the Moorish occupation, it was later remodelled by the Christian kings. Another of Palma de Mallorca’s major attractions is Bellver Castle, located 3 km from the centre of the city, it was started in 1309 in the times of Jaime II.
Other attractions to be found in Palma de Mallorca include the Arab Baths, the Palau Episcopal, the Museu de Mallorca, the Casa Oleo, the Palau Vivot and the Convent de Sant Francesc.
Those with shopping in mind will not be disappointed in Palma, some of the best outlets can be found in Av. Jaume III. The town is buzzing at night-time, especially during the busy summer season, with plenty of bars open until the early hours.
For beach lovers, there are plenty of superb sandy beaches nearby and some of Mallorca’s most popular resorts are gathered around the city. Worth a try is the "toytown" train to the town of Soller, a beautiful journey of 27km.
Around the Bay of Palma you will find some of the best known and busiest resorts on the island including Magaluf, Portals Nous, Palma Nova, San Agusti, Santa Ponsa, Can Canar, Can Pastilla, Ses Cadenes and S'Arenal.
Palma is also the location of the airport for the island, situated to the east of the city centre.
