Towns of Mallorca - Alcudia and Puerto d'Alcudia

Alcudia - Lying in the large Bay of Alcudia, formed by the Cap de Formentor and Cap d’es Pinar peninsulars is the ancient walled town of Alcudia, one of the largest towns on the island of Mallorca.

Alcudia's impressive fortifications, which were built to protect the town from raiding pirates, can still be seen today, as can some remains of its Roman settlements including the ruins of Roman Pollentia and the remains of a Roman ampitheatre, carved out of solid rock during the 1st century BC, it is reputed to be the smallest Roman theatre in Spain. The original walls of the town were constructed by the Moors, they were reinforced and improved during the 16th century.

The narrow streets of Alcudia’s old town still retain much of their original charm and are well worth a look if you are visiting the town. The harbour area, Port D’Alcudia is a popular location for visitors, having plenty of bars and restaurants and also a number of hotels and apartment blocks, it is a working port with both pleasure and commercial uses.

Alcudia has some excellent beaches, of clean white sand, and these stretch for some 10 kilometres as far as Can Picafort, to the south of Alcudia.

The main beach is safe for families and has a good range of amenities and some water sports facilities, sunbeds and parasols are available for those simply wishing to relax in the sun.

Alcudia is adjacent to Playa de Muro, and inland from here is the Nature Reserve known as S'Albufera, a wetland refuge for over 200 bird species and a wonderful place for cycling or hiking, the park covers an area of some 2,000 acres.

Alcudia is in the north of Majorca, and is about 65 kilometres drive from the airport at Palma de Mallorca.
