A former Moorish stronghold, located on a hilltop just inland from Capdepera in the north-east of Mallorca, the town of Arta (artà) got its name from the Arab word jertan ("garden"). Arta is an interesting place to visit as many of its ancient fortifications are still intact, reminding present day visitors of the classic struggle between Moors and Christians that went on there.
While you are there be sure to visit the parish church of Transfiguració del Senyour, dating from the 13th century, and the fortified church of Sant Salvador, situated on a hilltop above the town. Follow a sign markes "talaiot", to the south of the town and you will find one of the most important megalithic sites on Mallorca, Ses Paisses, dating from 1200-800 BC, it contains some huge stone blocks and a massive gateway. Arta has its market day on Tuesdays.
Arta is located off the MA-15 between Capdepera and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, about 80 kilometres from the airport at Palma de Mallorca .
