Santiago de la Ribera - Costa Calida - Spain

Santiago de la Ribera: The charming little coastal resort of Santiago de la Ribera, lies on the shores of the Mar Menor sea, in the Costa Calida regon of Spain. Benefitting from the warm Mar Menor waters, Santiago de la Ribera is a popular holiday resort, having safe, sandy beaches, a pretty promenade, and a marina, Club Nautico.

Originally developing around a religious hermitage erected in 1888, the town got its name from the founder of the hermitage, who was a Knight of the Order of Santiago.

The Mar MenorAt first just a fishing village, Santiago de la Ribera later attracted the attention of rich Murcian residents, who found it an ideal location for summer holiday homes, as they wished to escape the heat of Murcia city, and other airless inland towns.

Santiago de la Ribera also became home to a number of pilots and their families, due to its proximity to an air base. The area where they lived became known as “The City of Air” (in Spanish La Ciudad del Aire).

In the last few decades the town has attracted International tourists, with the Mar Menor becoming very popular with Brits, Irish, Germans and Scandinavians, to name but a few, as well as the usual influx of Spanish visitors, especially from Murcia city, in July and August.

The Club Nautico (Sailing Club), of course, attracts sailing enthusiasts, and Santiago de la Ribera is also popular for water sports, especially windsurfing and kite-surfing, with the Mar Menor having ideal weather conditions for these sports. Golfers too, find this a good spot, with a number of fine golf courses nearby, such as Lo Romero (Campoverde), Roda Golf (Los Alcazares), and the Mar Menor Golf Resort (Torre Pacheco).

Santiago de la Ribera has the usual holiday resort facilities, with plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants, plus supermarkets for food shopping and general supplies. The Dos Mares shopping centre is also nearby for those seeking a little retail therapy, there is also a cinema there.

The main fiestas in Santiago de la Ribera are the festival of Santiago, held in July and the Virgen del Carmen, also in July, there are, of course, the usual Christmas (Three Kings) and Easter celebrations (Semana Santa).

From Santiago de la Ribera, you can visit the historic cities of Cartagena and Murcia, the unique sports resort of La Manga, and the unspoilt beaches of Calblanque.

Santiago de la Ribera is just 5 kilometres from San Javier airport, so is very handy to get to, and does not incur large transfer fees.
