Information on Santiago de la Ribera Murcia, a popular resort on the Mar Menor.

Santiago de la Ribera - Murcia - Spain

An attractive little coastal town in the municipality of San Javier, Santiago de la Ribera, Murcia is one of the popular resorts of the Mar Menor, which attracts visitors due to its warm, shallow waters and fine, sandy, safe beaches.

Santiago de la Ribera was originally a small hermitage built in 1888 and is named in honour St James the Apostle. This hermitage was founded by order of Friar José Maria Barnuevo Rodrigo de Villamayor, who was a Knight of the Military Order of Santiago, hence the name given to the town.

The original fishing village developed into a popular holiday destination for wealthy Murcian businessmen who built their summer houses along the coast. Santiago has an attractive promenade lined with pretty palm trees. Present day Santiago de la Ribera is still popular with the Spanish for their summer holidays, but also attracts tourists from all over Northern Europe.

The lovely promenade passes the Club Nautico and leads to an area known as La Ciudad del Aire ('City of Air') which was so named due to the fact that many of the pilots from the nearby air base lived there.

Santiago de la Ribera Murcia celebrates a number of fiestas each year, including the Three Kings (held in January), the festival of the Virgen del Carmen (held in July) and the Festival of Santiago (also in July). Santiago de la Ribera Murcia also holds the National Folk Festival.

Santiago de la Ribera Murcia boasts some four kilometres of beautiful sandy beaches which can be enjoyed by visitors, and these beaches can get very packed during the summer months when both Spanish and international tourists arrive to bask in the sunshine and bathe in the warm waters of the Mar Menor Sea and the Costa Calida.

Santiago de la Ribera boasts a popular water-sports centre and sailing club.

Santiago de la Ribera is ideally placed for enjoying the wonderful golfing facilities of this area and is within easy driving distance of such fine developments as the Roda Golf Resort, the Mar menor Golf Resort, Lo Romero Golf and the 3 exellent course of the Orihuela Costa.

Santiago de la Ribera Murcia can be easily accessed from the N-332 coast road or the AP-7 motorway.
