Los Realejos Tenerife: A largish town to the west of Puerto de la Cruz, on the island of Tenerife, Los Realejos is overlooked by Mount Tigaiga, and comprises a jumble of steep, winding streets, divided into two distinct areas, the upper town, and the lower town (Realejo Alto and Realejo Bajo). The town has a population of around 38,000 and is at an altitude of 260 to 420 metres.
Los Realejos History: Playing a unique part in the history of Tenerife, Los Realejos was where the final surrender of the Guanche chiefs (indigenous natives of Tenerife), took place in 1496, as the Spanish conquistadors took total control of the island.
Los Realejos Attractions: There are a couple of attractions which you might like to visit in Los Realejos, including Tenerife’s oldest church, the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol, which dates from 1498, and features an attractive wooden Mudejar vault. Its later 18th century tower contains a bell presented to the town by Ferdinand and Isabella. Los Realejos castle is not as old as it may first appear, and only dates back to 1862, it is however worth a look and boasts some beautiful gardens.
Los Realejos Beaches: The principality of Los Realejos has a coastal area with some popular beaches including Playa de Socorro, Playa de Fajana and Playa de Castro.
As can be seen from the Los Realejos map above, the town can be reached via the TF-5 (TF-335) it is to the west and around 12 kilometres driving distance from the resort of Puerto de la Cruz, and about 42 kilometres from the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife. To reach Los Realejos from either of Tenerife's airports requires a drive of 31 kilometres from Tenerife north airport (Los Rodeos), and 98 kilometres from Tenerife south airport (Reina Sofia).
