Icod de los Vinos Tenerife: A town and municipality on the north coast of Tenerife, Icod de los Vinos lies about 20 kilometres west of Puerto de la Cruz. The town has a population of around 22,000, and a municipal area of 95 square kilometres, it is best known as the location of the tallest and oldest Dragon Tree, in the entire Canary Islands group, and though it may not be as old as the 1,000 years, which is claimed, it is still worth a look, and attracts an amazing number of visitors to the town.
As the name suggests, Icod de los Vinos is well known for its wine, and the town is surrounded by a fertile valley, with lots of vineyards nearby. Agriculture has always been the main source of income for the town, and as well as the vineyards, there are banana plantations, and orchards, making it a thriving commercial town.
Icod de los Vinos Attractions: Among the attractions to visit in Icod de los Vinos are the aforementioned Dragon Tree (the Drago Milenario), the triple naved Iglesia de San Marcos, built during the 15th and 16th centuries and boasting a handsome Renaissance doorway, a Baroque altar with ornate silver decoration, and a beautiful coffered ceiling, the Mariposa del Drago, a greenhouse full of exotic butterflies, and the Museo de Arte Sacro, with its 8 foot high, silver filigree cross, thought to be the largest of its kind ever made.
Near to Icod de los Vinos, you will find the Cueva de Viento, possibly the world’s longest volcanic cave, being over 9 miles long.
As can be seen from the Icod de los Vinos map at the top of the page, the town can be reached via the TF-5 or the TF-82, it is about 20 kilometres from Puerto de la Cruz, and 57 kilometres from the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the nearest airport is Tenerife north (los Rodeos), which is about 46 kilometres driving distance from Icod de los Vinos.
