Playa Blanca - Formerly a traditional fishing village, the south-western resort of Playa Blanca has grown into one of the most popular destinations on the island of Lanzarote. Despite recent development Playa Blanca has retained much of its former charm and has not yet been spoiled by mass tourism. The best place to take a trip to neighbouring Fuerteventura, Playa Blanca also runs trips to the tiny island of Los Lobos.
A relatively laid back and relaxed resort Playa Blanca has an attractive harbour and a wonderful promenade for cool evening walks, with some excellent bars and restaurants it lacks the lively nightlife scene of Puerto del Carmen, which is a blessing to many who come here to get away from the unwelcome hustle and bustle of resort life.
Playa Blanca boasts several decent beaches including Playa Blanca beach, Playa Flamingo and Playa Dorada, and 4 kilometres south of the resort are the fine beaches of Playas de Papagayo located in some pretty little coves and bays.
For those with a little more adventure in their blood, the nearby Castillo de las Colorados at Punta del Aguila is worth a look, built in the 1740’s, it acted as a watchtower to warn residents of impending attacks from raiding pirates, a common occurrence in those times.
Also worth a visit is the nature reserve at Los Ajaches, established in 1991 and Lanzarote's first Norman settlement at San Marcial del Rubicon.
Playa Blanca enjoys a fine climate with sunny weather expected all year round. There are plenty of hotels in Playa Blanca, and also a good choice of villas and apartments for rent.
Playa Blanca is the place to catch a boat trip to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura, which lands at Corralejo, boat trips also run to Playa de Papagayo and the small island of Los Lobos.
An ideal resort for a relaxing holiday, Playa Blanca can be reached by way of the LZ-2 from Arrecife via Yaiza and about 33 kilometres from the airport.
