Guide to Haria, a small town on the island of Lanzarote, Canary Islands.
Towns of Lanzarote - Haria
Haria Lanzarote - Lying in the Valley of 1000 Palms, in the north of the island of Lanzarote, the small town of Haria is perhaps the prettiest on the island. Having something of a Middle-Eastern feel, the village is greener than anywhere else in Lanzarote’s stark volcanic landscape. The palm trees originated from an old custom of the 17th and 18th centuries, when new palm trees were planted each time a baby was born.
Visitors will find it pleasant to while away a hour or two in the Plaza Leon y Castillo, a shady tree-lined square in the centre of the village. If you are visiting on a Saturday, you will find a nice little handicraft market in the square - a great place to pick up a souvenir or two.
Lanzarote’s favourite son, César Manrique, moved into a farm house just outside Haria in an effort to get away from the public eye.
For the best views of Haria, approach from the north.
Apart from a town, Haria is also a municipality of the same name, taking up the northern section of Lanzarote, the municipality has a population of around 5,000.
Within the municipality of Haria there are a number of interesting places to visit including the Jameos del Agua caves, the Cueva de los Verdes, Isla Graciosa off the northern tip and the Malpais de la Corona badlands.
Haria can be reached by way of the LZ-10 from Arrecife via Teguise.
