Huesca History: A city and province in the north of the Aragon region of Spain, Huesca city was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC as Osca. Later occupied by the Moors, who renamed it Wasqa, it was reconquered by Christian forces led by Peter of Aragon in 1096, and for a short time it was the capital of Aragon until superceded by Zaragoza in 1118.
Well worth a visit in Huesca is the Gothic cathedral, with its 13th century portal and unusual Mudéjar style gallery, located in the Plaza de la Catedral, the Museo Diocesano, with exhibits of religious art, and the Museo de Huesca, where you can learn something about the history of Huecsa and the surrounding region.
Church lovers will no doubt want to take a peek at the Iglesia de San Pedro el Viejo, which dates from the 12th century, a couple of Aragon’s Kings lie buried here, which adds to the attraction for those with an interest in history.

Huesca can be reached by way of the A-23 or the N-240, it is a 74 kilometre drive from the regional capital Zaragoza and 89 kilometres from Zaragoza airport, a journey which should take about 1 hour 30 minutes, it is 388 kilometres from Spain’s capital Madrid.
