Balearic Islands Guide - A popular holiday paradise situated in the Mediterranean Sea, the Balearic Islands comprise four main islands - Ibiza, Mallorca (Majorca), Menorca (Minorca) and Formentera. Enjoying a wonderful all year round climate this island group boasts magnificent beaches, ancient towns and villages, super Natural Parks and a friendly easy going population.
Each of the Balearic Islands has its own unique character and each may appeal to a different kind of visitor. The younger set may head for the club capital of the world, Ibiza or maybe the southern resorts of Mallorca (Majorca), where they can laze on the beach by day and party all night.
At the other end of the spectrum, culture hounds might seek out an ancient Gothic cathedral such as the wonderful example to be found in Palma de Mallorca, or perhaps visit the many Stone Age ruins which can be found on the island of Menorca (Minorca).
All of the islands boast some charming little fishing villages, where life goes on much as it has for a thousand years or so, in these villages you can find peace and tranquillity and forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The Balearic Islands are an autonomous region of Spain, the official languages are Spanish (Castillian) and Catalan, the total population of the islands is around 1 million, the large majority of which live on Mallorca and Ibiza. The highest point of the Balearic Islands is the Puig Major on Mallorca, with an altitude of 1432 metres above sea level.
