Towns of Menorca - Mahon

Mahon Menorca - The capital of the island of Menorca (Minorca) in the Spanish Balearic Islands, Mahon (Maó in Catalan) boasts one of the finest deepwater harbours in the Mediterranean. This fact made Mahon a prime target for navy's and pirates over the centuries, and attracted the British Royal Navy, who conquered the island of Menorca, just so that they could control the harbour and use it as their base in the Mediterranean. The British took control of Mahon in 1708 and despite briefly losing it to the French in 1756 (for which Admiral Byng was blamed and shot), kept control until 1802.

Mahon today is an elegant town with a number of interesting places to visit, the famous port is a must and is spread over about 2 miles, with the working port area at one end and a millionaire's yachting marina at the other, here you will also find plenty of bars and restaurants and a casino, it is in this area that Mahon's lively nightlife scene is centred.

The old town climbs up a hill from the harbour and here you will find the 18th century Carmelite church (Església del Carme), the Menorca Museum, housed in an old Franciscan Convent, the Town Hall, displaying a famous clock donated by the first British Governor of Menorca, and the Esglesia de Sant Francesc, with its intriguing Romanesque doorway.

The International Airport for Menorca is located about 4.5 kilometres south-west of the town, and it is here that the majority of visitors to Menorca arrive, although a large number alight via the port where ferries arrive from Barcelona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca.
