Costa Blanca Towns - Almoradi

Almoradi, another of the many towns of the Vega Baja del Segura district of Alicante, Almoradi stands to the north of the Segura River (Rio Segura), near to Algorfa and Rojales. Part of the Comunidad de Valencia and in the area most commonly known as the Costa Blanca, Almoradi has around 17,500 inhabitants.

Legend has it that the town was founded by Brigo an ancient king who lived in around 1196 BC, the original settlement was called Amarion and was subsequently settled by other civilisations such as Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Moors. It was the Moors who developed the agriculture of the area, on which the town has depended for many centuries, though the Moors were of course later re-conquered by the Christians under Jaime I. In 1586 Almoradi became an independent town.

The huge and well known earthquake of 1829 hit the town of Almoradi in a big way, in fact almost totally destroying it, so the current it town is mostly post this time as it had to be totally rebuilt.

Although Almoradi has mostly depended on agriculture it does also have a furniture industry which is significant and important for the town.

Almoradi has a bustling town centre with plenty of restaurants, bars and shops, it does attract quite a few holidaymakers, being close to the coast of the Costa Blanca, with resorts like Guardamar del Segura and La Mata nearby.

There is a busy Saturday market in Almoradi Costa Blanca, which attracts plenty of visitors each week, and is a good place to visit to pass an hour or two.

Almoradi is 15 km from the town of Orihuela, 47 km from the city of Alicante and 195 km from the city of Valencia.
