One of the most attractive towns on Gran Canaria, Teror is also the religious capital of the island, due to the supposed appearance of the Señora del Pino (our Lady of the Pines), in the branches of a pine tree in 1492. The cathedral in honour of who is now the patron saint of Gran Canaria, the 18th century Neo-classical Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pino, is Teror's most famous building, featuring huge stone columns, a wooden ceiling, and a 15th century statie of the Virgin dressed in traditional robes.
Teror is a place of pilgrimage for the people of Gran Canaria throughout the year but especially during September when there is a fiesta in honour of the saint (Fiesta de la Virgen del Pino).
The pretty Plaza Nuestra Señora del Pino is lined with grand old houses, mostly untouched by progress or tourism. Apart from the cathedral, also worth a look in Teror is the Casa de los Patronos de la Virgen, a museum with exhibits relating to rich families who previously owned the house, among its residents was the wife of Simon Bolivar.
Teror can be reached by way of the GC-21 from the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
