The prime beach for the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Playa de las Canteras is a golden, sandy beach stretching for almost 4 kilometres on the western side of the city in the Santa Catalina district, the La Isleta district is to the north of the beach.
Playa de las Canteras is backed by the attractive promenade, Paseo de las Canteras, which is lined with a dazzling array of shops, bars and restaurants, to service the huge numbers of visitors who arrive there all year round.
A reef called La Barra, protects the beach against strong surf, and the warm waters are relatively shallow and safe. Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire on the beach, and there is the usual range of other facilities, including access for the disabled. Playa de las Canteras has been awarded 'Blue Flag' status for cleanliness and safety and is generally regarded as one of the finest beaches in the Canary Islands as a whole.
Playa de las Canteras is in the north-western area of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the airport at Gando is about 20 kilometres to the south.
