Betanzos Galicia: An attractive town and municipality lying in a fertile valley inland from A Coruña in Galicia, north-western Spain, Betanzos has a population of around 13,500, it is a historic town with a well preserved “old quarter”, its best attractions include the Iglesia de San Francisco, dating from the late 14th century, the Iglesia de Santiago, constructed in the 15th century, and the main town square, with its pretty fountain (a copy of the Verailles Fountain of Diana).
The old town walls are also well preserved with three of the original entrance gates intact.
Among the fiestas and celebrations held in Betanzos are the Fiesta de San Roque which is held in August and is well worth a visit, look out for the huge paper balloon which is released as part of the celebrations.
Betanzos is situated inland from the Atlantic coastline on the River Mandeo, and can be reached via the A6 (E-70), the N-V1 and the N-651. Betanzos is about 30 kilometres drive from A Coruña.
