Resorts of the Algarve Portugal - Sagres

Sagres Portugal - Located on a peninsular that was once considered by Europeans to be the edge of the world, the town of Sagres is most famous as the location of Henry the Navigator's sailing school.

These days renowned as a surfing resort, due to the rough seas which are experienced in the area, Sagres also has some fine sandy beaches and some stunning coastline to explore, together with numerous buildings of historical interest to enjoy.

The huge fortress (Fortaleza de Sagres) that stands on the rocky headland of the Sagres peninsular, was built during the 15th century, though mostly destroyed by the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755, it was later rebuilt.

Among the other places to visit in and around Sagres are the Nossa Senhora de Graca chapel, dating from the 16th century, the Rosa dos Ventos giant wind compass, said to have been built by Henry the Navigator himself, the Fortaleza do Beliche (17th century), the Cabo Sao Vicente (Cape) , the Roman Kiln ruins at Martinhal and the stunning Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, a beautiful nature reserve taking in sections of the Algarve's rugged coastline.

Sagres can be accessed via the N-125, it is about 40 kilometres from Lagos and 115 kilometres from Faro and its airport.
