Resorts of the Algarve Portugal - Lagos
Lagos Portugal - Former capital of the Algarve region of Portugal, the historic town of Lagos is now one of the most lively and popular resorts along this coast, offering an attractive mix of beach resort, shopping centre and cultural town.
An ancient harbour often frequented by the famous Henry the Navigator, Lagos was important in the days when Portugal was a world power, and though much of the old town was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755, there are still some interesting places to visit.
To get a sense of the history of Lagos, head for the Municipal Museum (Museu Municipal), where you can see some fine exhibits of coins, pottery and Roman mosaics, from here move on to the Igreja de Santo António (Church of St Anthony), which survived the earthquake of 1755 and features a painted, vaulted ceiling and a stunning interior. Another church of interest is the 16th century Igreja de Santa Maria, restored in the 19th century it has some interesting wooden statues.
These days Lagos is a bustling holiday resort with some decent hotels, fine beaches (the main beach is called Meia Praia), plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, and a lively nightlife scene, it is also popular for water sports.
Lagos is situated to the west of Portimao and can be accessed from the N-125 or the A-22 motorway.
