Palafrugell Spain - Located north of the resort of Palamos on the Costa Brava coastline of Catalonia in north-eastern Spain, the delightful town of Palafrugell has a population of 21,412 (2007) and a municipal area of 26.89 km2. Despite its location just 4 kilometres from the coast, Palafrugell remains largely unaffected by tourism and its charming old town comprises a cluster of narrow streets and alleyways gathered around its 16th century Gothic church (St Martin's). The town was fortified during medieval times though no evidence of this remains.
Situated in the Baix Empordà district of the Girona province Palafrugell's municipal area includes the coastal resorts of Tamariu, Calella and Llafranc, all amongst the most attractive and least spoilt to be found along the Costa Brava coastline.
Though there is not a great deal to do in Palafrugell it is still worth a visit and apart from St Martin's church you can visit the Museu del Suro (Carrer de la Tarongeta) a museum dedicated to the cork industry which was very important for the town during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Plaça Nova, the central square around which the old town emanates.
Palafrugell has a regular bus service with Barcelona and local connections to Calella, Tamariu and Llafranc.
Palafrugell Hotels - There are plenty of hotels to choose from in the coastal towns of Llafranc, Tamariu and Calella, all being popular holiday resorts, in the town itself you can try the Hostal Plaja (972 610 828), the Fonda L'Estrella (972 300 005) or the Pensio Familiar (972 300 043). Outside in the village of Torrent is the highly recommended Hotel Mas de Torrent. The area is very busy during the summer months, so be sure to book in advance.
Palafrugell Markets - There is a daily fruit and vegetable market held in Palafrugell (Tuesday to Saturday), near to the church and the Plaça Nova, and a weekly market on Sundays, during the summer season evening markets are also held.
Palafrugell Fiestas - Palafrugell holds numerous celebrations and fiestas throughout the year, if you are visiting, check with the local Tourist Information Office for events being held during your stay.
Palafrugell Camping - Campers will not be disappointed with the local Palafrugell camping facilities as the Camping La Siesta site is nearby and located amongst pine trees and close to the spectacular beaches of the Costa Brava. A family oriented site with excellent facilities including 2 swimming pools, sun terrace, volleyball, tennis, children's playground, bar, restaurant, internet, safety deposit boxes, showers, toilets, supermarket, washing machines and baby room. The site is handy for the beaches of Calella de Palafrugell.
Palafrugell is situated on the C-31/C-66, north of Palamos, it is about 40 kilometres from Girona and its airport, and about 125 kilometres from Barcelona.
