Originally founded by the Van Dulken brothers, by a merging of two large estates, the town of Calahonda was the site of a fort house, designed to protect local inhabitants from invading pirates.
Later established as a residencial area of low rise villas and houses it has in recent years become a popular holiday destination, particularly appealing to golfers due to the large number of excellent golf courses in the area, in fact there are at least a dozen within easy driving distance of the resort including the huge La Cala Golf Resort, Mijas Golf, the Marbella Golf and Country Club, the Santa Maria Golf and Country Club and Cabopino Golf Marbella. Well known for its high standards and built quality, the urbanization Sitio de Calahonda has won a number of prestigious awards. Runninng gently from the coast up undulating hills, parts of Calahonda offer superb views of the surrounding coastline.
Calahonda has its own natural harbour, known as Puerto Cabopino and a number of fine sandy beaches nearby, it boasts an excellent range of amenities including the El Zoro commercial centre. A famous landmark the La Naranga Social Club was founded by Juan Orbaneja, and was one of the first meeting places for local residents.
There are few hotels in Calahonda and the most popular form of accommodation is privately owned self catering villas and apartments, of which a good choice can be found on the internet. Calahonda is ideally situated for visiting the upmarket resort of Marbella, just a short distance to the west.
Calahonda is situated off the A-7 and the AP-7 Motorway between Marbella and Fuengirola, it is around 35 kilometres from Malaga and its International airport.
