Recognised as the oldest inhabited city in Europe, Cadiz jutting out of the Bay of Cadiz is virtually surrounded by water, and was founded as a trading post by the Phoenicians in around 1104 BC, as a port it later enjoyed the wealth brought back from the Americas.
