Punta Umbria Spain

Guide to Punta Umbria, located in the province of Huelva on the Costa de la Luz.

Costa de la Luz Resorts - Punta Umbria

One of the main coastal resorts in the province of Huelva on the Costa de la Luz, Andalucia, Spain, Punta Umbria was first developed by the Rio Tinto Company, a British mining concern, for the convalescence of its employees. Apparently the company originally got permission to build a sanatorium but built some colonial style wooden houses instead.

Punta Umbria is situated beside Huelva in the Odiel River estuary and is surrounded by the wetland marshes of the Marismas del Odiel Natural Park, a long bridge spans the marshes giving access from Huelva.

There are some excellent beaches along the south side of the ‘punta’, the nearest to the town being Playa de la Mata Negra, this fine sandy beach is backed by a selection of bars and restaurants and has some good facilities, it is also a popular area for water sports such as windsurfing.

Mostly popular with Spanish holidaymakers, Punta Umbria is becoming increasingly noticed by international tourists, so visitor numbers will no doubt increase in the coming years.

Punta Umbria has a fairly limited choice of hotels, the best known being the Hotel Barcelo Punta Umbria, the Hotel Pato Amarillo and the Meridiano 7 Resort.

Punta Umbria can be accessed from Huelva or by way of the A-5052 from Laguna del Portil. The nearest airports are at Seville and Faro on the Algarve, Portugal.
