Costa del Azahar Towns - Burriana
Burriana - A sizeable town, some 13 kilometres from Castellon de la Plana, Burriana has a population of around 34,000 and has a beach and harbour area, attracting holidaymakers and water sports enthusiasts to the area.
Originally settled by the ancient Iberians in the centuries BC, Burriana was developed as a town by the Moors during the 9th century when it was known as Medina Alhandra (or The Green City). Freed from Arab control in 1233 by the forces of Jaime I of Aragon, Burriana was subsequently granted similar privileges to Valencia and allowed to fly its own flag, by Pere IV in 1339. For many centuries Burriana was a fortified town, with significant town walls, these remianed in place until the 18th century, when increasing population required them to be removed, the town was granted city status in 1901.
Places of interest in Burriana include the Gothic El Salvador church (13th century) and its 15th century bell-tower, rebuilt in the 18th century, destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and again rebuilt in the 1940's, the San Jose de los Carmelitas Descalzos church, and the unique Orange Museum (Museo de la Naranja), the only museum of its kind in Europe, outlining the history and cultivation of the orange from its earliest origins
In the coastal area of Burriana there are several excellent beaches and an attractive harbour, which now mostly acts as a marina, naurical club and sailing school, this is also a popular area for windsurfing.
Burriana is located to the south of Castellon de la Plana and can be accessed from the AP-7 motorway or the CV-18.
