Sant Francesc Formentera (Sant Francesc Xavier) - The capital of Formentera in the Spanish Balearic Islands, is Sant Francesc (Sant Francesc Xavier), a town with barely one thousand inhabitants. Apart from several defensive watchtowers dotted around the island, Sant Francesc has the majority of Formentera's architectural heritage.
Worth visiting are the 14th century Capilla de sa Tanca Vell, an interesting stone building with no windows which was used as a refuge from pirate attacks, the Museu de Etnografia de Formentera (Ethnological Museum) which has interesting exhibits of tool and traditional utensils used by the people of Formentera including tools used for farming, fishing and salt production, and the 18th century fortified church (Església de Sant Francesc de Formentera) which stands in the main Plaça de la Constitucio.
Sant Francesc is located on the PM-820, the only major road on Formentera.
