An ancient town, Petrer was settled as far back as the Neolithic Period and had Iberian settlers around 4,000 years ago. Its castle was built in the 12th century, during the Arab occupation of the region. After the Christian reconquest it became first part of Castille (1244), and later part of Aragon after the Treaty of Elche (1305). The remaining Moors were expelled in 1609, after which the town became depopulated and suffered a period of decline.
Modern day Petrer has an important footwear industry, its main tourist attractions are the Moorish castle, the San Bartolome church and the hermitage of San Bonifacio, its main fiesta is the Moors and Christians festival, held in May.
