A sizeable University city and also the commercial capital of the Asturias region of northern Spain, Oviedo is an important industrial city that prospered due to the nearby coal mines that were operating in the 19th century. Its known history goes back to the 9th century, when the Asturian King Alfonso II built his Royal Court there, the University dates from around 1600. Oviedo's main religious monument is the Catedral de San Salvador, built during the 14th to 16th centuries, around a chapel, originally built by Alfonso II.
Oviedo can be reached by road and railway, the nearest airport is about 43 kilometres away at Ranón.
