Places to Visit - Mazarron Castle
Mazarron Castle: Worth a look if you are visiting the Costa Calida this year, is the recently restored Mazarron castle.
This historic castle dating back to the 16th century was originally commissioned by the powerful Duke of Velez, and was constructed to protect the mining interests of the Mazarron area, in particular the mining of alum, which was an important ingredient in textile processing. The castle also served as protection from Barbary pirates who sailed these coasts many centuries ago.
Mazarron castle eventually fell into ruin, as the pirate threat diminished, and much of the stone was used for other building projects in the area. While still a ruin, the castle has been preserved to prevent further detereoration.
The restoration project received useful support from the regional government of Murcia, and is part of an ongoing campaign to preserve the region's rich heritage.
Mazarron is located west of Cartagena, and can be accessed from the N-332 or the AP-7 motorway, its coastal limb Puerto Mazarron is around 6 kilometres away.
