Founded by the Moors is the late 9th century as a village called Magerit, Madrid grew through the centuries to become one of the greatest cities in the world. The largest city in Spain, Madrid now has a population of around 3.3 million people, and in its metropolitan area, around 5.5 million.
The city attracts millions of visitors every year, who come to enjoy its vast array of attractions including the Palacio Real, the Prado Museum, the Museo Thyssen-Bournemisza, the Parque del Retiro, the Plaza Mayor and the celebrated bullring, the largest in Spain.
