A small coastal town at the northern end of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, Carboneras is a popular holiday destination with plenty of sandy beaches and some fine seafood restaurants. Less well known than Mojacar and Garrucha to the north, Carboneras has a fortified 16th century castle and a couple of ancient watch towers dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. The local street market in Carboneras is held on Thursdays, so this is a good day for a visit, if you have time take a stroll along the promenade to the lighthouse at Mesa Roldan where you can enjoy some wonderful views of the surrounding Costa Almeria coastline.
Carboneras can be reached via the N-341 from the A-7 (E-15) motorway, it is about 60 kilometres from Almeria.
